The Sino-Japan Youth Conference is an important platform for dialogue between young ambassadors and an exciting opportunity to build cross-border friendships. In this packed 8-day summer programme from 4th to 11th of August, 2011 on the campus of LPCUWC, students from Hong Kong, Mainland China and Japan will engage in constructive dialogue, cultural activities, leadership training and community services conducted in the Guangdong province. The goal of the conference is to increase intercultural understanding in hopes of a more peaceful future between Japan and China.

Please note that participants will be selected based on merits in aspects including experiences of social, cultural importance, and not on their academic achievements or command of the English language. Please join us as we meet our neighbours and learn about each other’s cultures to deepen the understanding on today’s Sino-Japanese relationship and pave the way to future opportunities for initiatives to improve Sino-Japanese relations.

Please visit our websitehttp://sinojapanyouthconference.org for further information, including sample programmes, last year’s conference details and further application details.

Mr Gui Vessaro is a long serving Mathematics teacher at Island School and Head of Nansen House. Gui who is only 44 years old, suffered a serious heart attack at the end of August this year, which left him in a coma and he has remained unresponsive ever since. He is currently in Tung Wah Hospital but there is a high probability he will need to be repatriated to his home country of Argentina, in late December. However this will be a very expensive undertaking for his family, as it is not covered by his medical insurance. Therefore friends and colleagues within ESF are trying to raise as much money as possible to help Gui and his family.

With this in mind we will be hosting a special “Dress Blue Day” on Friday 19th November at KJS, for staff and students. We hope that everyone will come in dressed all in blue (representing the blue flag of Argentina) on that day and bring in a donation to help send Gui home again. There is no minimum donation for Dress Blue Day but we hope that everyone will send in money for this very worthwhile cause. In addition, several male members of staff will be growing moustaches in support of “Movember” and their sponsorship money will also be donated to the Gui Vessaro repatriation fund. Thank you in advance for your support.

How to donate

The person in charge of the fundraising [at Island School] is called Betty. You can reach her on betty@mail.island.edu.hk

With all collections for Gui,
Cheques can be made payable to “Island School Almagamated Charities” and sent to Island School, 20 Borrett Road, HK RE: GUI’s Collection
Direct transfer of fund to HSBC account no. 111-110466-001
Swift Code is HSBCHKHHHKH for overseas transfer of fund into our account
HSBC Address is 1 Queen’s Road, Central, HK

She will be really pleased for any contribution (from LPC folk) and will keep us updated. Apparently, students, staff, friends go and see him regularly; students read stories to him, people tell jokes etc. Sometimes he opens his eyes when he hears a noise. Will keep you informed if I hear any more.

This is where Guillermo is located for anyone who might want to visit.

“Gui is in Tung Wah hospital, Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, first building on the left as you enter the hospital gate. Then 6th floor, bed number 16. No parking although some on the streets around and about but I usually take a taxi. Visiting is 12-1pm and 5-8pm.”

The second Sino-Japan Youth Conference from the 3rd to 9th of August was successfully held at the College.

The Sino-Japan Youth Conference is a program for Chinese and Japanese secondary school students from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Japan. It provides an opportunity for students to come together as Youth Ambassadors, to develop mutual respect, discuss issues on the Sino-Japanese relationships and be empowered to put forward new initiatives as young citizens of today’s world. More importantly, the entire conference preparation is organised by students and graduates from United World Colleges around the world with a foundational base at LPCUWC. It is truly a unique opportunity for inter-UWC collaboration.

The Final Report of the Sino-Japan Youth Conference 2010 can be downloaded from here. More information about the coming Sino-Japan Youth Conference of 2011 can be found at www.sinojapanyouthconference.org.
