Guidance > S3 (Student Support System) Programme
Substance Abuse. Monday 7th February.
Substance abuse is a major concern in many countries, especially among
the younger generation. To illustrate this, we can take the example of
the Hong Kong government, which spends about HK$ 80 million each in order
to curb drug abuse. Working together with the government is the Kelly
Support Group that tries to promote drug awareness among other things
in young people. As part of its nation-wide effort to fight drug misuse,
the Kelly support group came to Li Po Chun to give a talk to Li Po Chun
Students.
The presentation started with a crossword puzzle about the names and
effects of common drugs. Surprisingly in an instituition which has the
top intellects from all over the world, only one student was able to
complete the crossword puzzle even after numerous hints by the facilitators.
This only served to show the lack of knowledge about drugs which is in
the youth. After this came an interactive presentation about drugs, their
common names and effects and fines and punishments for using them. Many
people were taken aback by the fact that if you buy drugs for your friend
you may be found guilty of drug trafficking and have to pay literally
millions of dollars worth of fines and maybe spend years in prison.
After this came a role-play by the students where they had to depict
a young man introduced to drugs by his friends, which was very interesting
and fun for the scholars. This served as the conclusion to the afternoon
which was one of the most enlightening and informative S3 sessions at
LPC.
