Guidance > S3 (Student Support System) Programme

Values

The Student Support system is a program organized by Li Po Chun United World College as a means of providing a holistic approach to education that encompasses development of the person physically, spiritually and mentally. The S³ together with the TOK course encourage the student to think independently and help students discover themselves. From the description above it is apparent that the S³ session on values was quite enlightening for the students. However what is hidden is that the session was actually fun, yes it’s not a typing error; school organized activities at LPC can actually be fun. It all started by asking students whether kissing was more important than attending lessons.

The facilitators of the session (teachers and a handful of second years not too keen on doing their mathematics homework) divided the first years into groups according to some arcanum LPC method and each student was given a sheet of questions which they were to ask their partners (groups of two or three) in order to help the students discover their values in life. A sample of the way the question and answer was supposed to be conducted is:
Student A: Tell me something unimportant you do every day
Student B (obviously from Block 4): Take a shower
Student A: What would happen for you not to take a shower?
   Student B: I had a Chemistry test
Student A: So what would happen for you to take a shower even though you had a chemistry                   test?
Student B: I smelled real bad and my roommates were complaining
Student A: So what would happen for you not to take a shower even though you smelled real                    bad and your roommates were complaining?
   Student B: Um err, I mean…

So, the questions would go on until the Student was stuck for an answer and he/she asked the questions to the other student. As you might notice the last answer indicated the things the answerer valued most. This ingenious method of eliciting one’s values went on or many minutes and it was fun as well because you got to discover the other person’s character and personality (if it was not obvious from his smell). After this we then discussed issues about values for example whether or not values are important in life and whether they help us set goals or not and if we needed values or not.

All in all the S³ session helped students in a number of ways unique to each particular student and we are all looking forward to the following sessions.
