The Global Concerns
Action Team (GCAT) is a service group which aims to offer active support
to people in genuine need in other places. The focus is on action – doing
something – rather than being yet another forum for discussions.
This group aims to take action that makes a positive difference to
help people in other places who are disadvantaged by issues that are
significant on a global scale. All GCAT projects involve either expressing
compassion through action for those who are very poor or disadvantaged
on the spectrum of global wealth or helping people who are being hurt
directly by global environmental issues. The Team hopes to organize
fund raising to help people and to recruit voluntary labour to help
with certain projects, such as during Project Week, etc. It is intended
that financial assistance be given to support the poorest communities
and most needy families, not usually as a straight financial handout
but in a form that provides a basis to ensure ongoing benefits. In
this way, GCAT projects aim to empower recipients, to help enable them
take control of their lives. Just as importantly, Global Concerns aims
to develop a deep sense of lifelong responsibility within the students
throughout the College, so that they will always perceive these issues
as being important and grow into competent, concerned, compassionate
and caring citizens who will want to take action to support those less
fortunate than themselves.
