Yao Tribe Project
Last update 30th January 2009
Introduction
This year is the tenth anniversary of the visits to Yao tribe.
Every year, through the leadership of teachers and students, we visit the primary school children, teach them English and engage in cultural performances. In addition, we work to seek donors for scholarships to enable selected children to further their secondary education at a good boarding secondary school.
What we have done so far?
In the past few years, part of our funds came from the annual school fundraising dinner, selling of handicrafts, donations such as from the Parents Night in 2008. We are glad to say that parents have given generously to support the project and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their enthusiasm in supporting primary education in China.
China week
The First Yao tribe visited Liannan in the 1997 March project week. In 2008, there were three project teams visiting different schools with Yao tribe children. In China week, we interviewed some of the children, visited their homes and chatted with their family to choose potential candidates. If they got accepted, they would be able to get a secondary education!
We taught them basic conversation, played games with them and even gave them English names. But most important of all, we build friendships with them and learn from each other.
