The College is grateful to have received a Capacity Enhancement Grant (CEG) of HK$111,555 (basic provision HK$44,643 and additional time-limited funding HK$66,912) for the academic year 2006-07.
In line with proposal made to the Education and Manpower Bureau, the CEG funds received for the school year 2006-07 were used to employ an additional teacher of Mandarin. This released the other Mandarin teachers to work on enhancing the teaching resources at the disposal of the department and the professional development of a new member of the full-time Mandarin staff. The additional time released enabled the teacher in charge of Mandarin to work closely with the other teachers of the subject in developing resources and teaching strategies appropriate to the various IB courses taught. In particular they have developed a 40-page booklet of materials for the teaching of the Mandarin ab initio course, which they have submitted to the IB curriculum office in Cardiff so that it can be shared with all teachers of the subject worldwide. One outcome is that the number of students studying this subject (22 taking the exam in May 2007 and probably 23 in May 2008) are amongst the highest in the College’s history.
