Academics

ib dp programmeThe academic programme at LPCUWC is shaped by the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme. As such, students consider the subject material in the light of the international context which provides the context for the qualification and study at LPC. Students study 6 subjects - 3 at a Higher Level and 3 at a Standard Level - chosen from each of the six subject areas (as shown in the Diploma diagram).

In addition, all candidates must complete the Theory of Knowledge course which allows them to question how knowledge is derived and how reliable it is. The Extended Essay is a 4,000 word piece of academic writing that allows students to explore a topic of their choice, exploring subject matter that is of interest and has inspired them to delve deeper.

The IB Diploma is excellent preparation for the rigours of universities across the world, and LPCUWC graduates gain access to a wide range of universities and courses. With each subject being scored out of a maximum score of 7 and 3 additional points available for the Core, 45 points are available with 24 required to gain the Diploma. An introduction to International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is available here. A summary of academic results is available here.

When such an outstanding academic environment is combined with the benefits of living together in a multi-cultural community and the opportunities provided by the Quan Cai programme, LPCUWC provides its students with a real advantage.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma at Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong

Students attend Li Po Chun United World College for the final two years of their secondary schooling and all students study for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, which requires that they study at least six, but no more than seven subjects chosen, as outlined in The Academic Programme, to cover a wide range of subject areas. A timetable is constructed that allows the maximum number of students to take their preferred combination of subjects. The students do not stay in the same class for all subjects, hence an individual student will have a variety of class companions in different subjects. The class sizes are small by Hong Kong standards, usually averaging about 16 and all classes are of mixed ability; there is no streaming.

In the IB system students can gain a maximum grade of 7 for each of their six Diploma subjects, giving a total of 42 points. On top of this, students can gain up to three extra points for their performance in the Theory of Knowledge course and their Extended Essay (see The Academic Programme), so that the maximum possible score for the IB diploma is 45 points. In order to be awarded the Diploma, students must achieve a total of at least 24 points with a good balance between their subjects. The results achieved by students at the College are amongst the best in the world and those achieved over recent years are summarised as follows:
