Empowering Changemakers: LPCUWC Students Join the Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village Programme

Updated: Oct 17

Funded by Techtronic Industries (TTI), the Youth Empowerment Programme brought together students from LPC and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to participate in a transformative initiative. This programme marked the first post-COVID iteration of Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village programme, blending meaningful community service with leadership development, communication training, and volunteering.

Designed to empower the next generation of changemakers, the programme offered participants the chance to engage in hands-on projects that create sustainable impact while honing critical skills for the future. From building homes to fostering teamwork and leadership, our students left inspired to continue driving positive change in their communities and beyond.

“As a UWC alum, I’m deeply grateful to witness the next generation embracing the passion for change. Coming full circle and having the opportunity to give back is a truly meaningful experience. My hope is that these students carry this torch forward—transforming their journey into practical, sustainable solutions that make a real difference,” stated Justin Yeung (LPC ‘18), Senior Executive, Sustainability and Communications at TTI.

“Through Global Village, I learned what 'a decent place to live' truly means—not in theory, but by helping build it. In Vietnam, we were empowered to build skills, confidence, and community, and to realise that we, too, can drive the change we envision. The work was physically demanding, but I’m returning to UWC with renewed hope and a deeper sense of responsibility, to share the reality I’ve seen and that students like us can contribute far more than we think possible,” said Keira.

Another participating student, Athena, shared: “This trip to Vietnam is truly a life-changing experience! Before setting off, none of us could imagine we would be able to build a house from the ground up within just one week. Yet after days of training and hard work, we found ourselves pouring cement floors and laying brick walls with our own hands.

The experience taught me something simple yet powerful: it’s really important to help others. No matter how big or small the contribution, just do it now, as there are still so many people in the world who are in need. Beyond the building itself, what made this journey unforgettable were the people. Not only did I share this wonderful experience with my fellow LPC classmates, but we also met so many kind and inspiring friends along the way.

I will always carry with me the great memories, laughter and lessons from this trip to Vietnam. It is truly a journey to remember!”
